Olex in Action

The Challenge Academy Trust Case Study

The Challenge Academy Trust (TCAT)

From Analytics to Action in Every Lesson

The Goal

The Challenge Academy Trust (TCAT) wanted to give teachers back time for the part of teaching that matters most: going back to classes to address misconceptions and secure understanding. Too often, by the time a pile of scripts was marked, the energy for that final, most transformational step had gone. With English classrooms across the Trust built around handwritten work, TCAT needed an approach that fitted pen-and-paper lessons, handled mock volumes at scale, and gave leaders and teachers clear data on what to teach next.

The Impact with Olex

  • Handwritten work assessed at scale across the Trust, from a single class set to a full mock series
  • Trust-wide analytics showing exactly what each class has and hasn’t secured, down to individual questions
  • Lessons replanned around the data – seating, grouping and pair work built around specific misconceptions
  • Teacher capacity reinvested in targeted small-group teaching and the relationships that move students on
  • 13% uplift in GCSE English Literature results at Grade 5

Tim on using Olex to increase teacher capacity

“Olex is providing the platform - the holy grail that we as teachers have always wanted - which is that we have that heavy lifting done for us. We, of course, sample it. We make sure that we’re confident with it. Then we think really long and hard about how, given this additional capacity, we can capitalise on that as educators.”
Tim Long, Digital Lead, The Challenge Academy Trust

How They Did It

  • Started working with Olex as a way to assess English writing at scale
  • Became an Olex MAT development partner, feeding back directly on what Trust classrooms needed and helping shape new features
  • Teachers sample and standardise Olex marking, mirroring existing exam moderation routines
  • Digital Lead working across every school on rollout, then on the pedagogy that follows from the analytics
  • Data used to plan the next lesson – regrouping pupils by misconception and targeting small-group teaching
“You’ve got this great data - what happens next with it? It might be changing seating and grouping so pupils who haven’t understood question four as well work with those who really got it. All those things we wanted to be able to do, but had to do so much legwork to get to, we can now get to without the same amount of effort.”
Tim Long, Digital Lead, The Challenge Academy Trust

What’s Next?

  • TCAT is now challenging colleagues across the Trust to build a pedagogy that matches the analytics: using the capacity Olex has created to plan sharper follow-up lessons and demonstrate the difference great teaching makes.
