Consistent with experienced examiners
Each script carried an established seed mark, against which all marks were compared. Most examiners marking the same script will reach a mark within 10-12% of each other, with some data suggesting up to 15% in certain cases. Our English Language scores sit slightly lower than Literature, which reflects the inherently subjective nature of creative writing assessment.

RMSE (root mean squared error) is the average distance between the Olex mark and the official examiner mark. Lower is better.

At every tolerance threshold, on both papers, Olex delivers marks that sit comfortably within the range experienced examiners agree on, giving teachers confidence in every mark.
How the study was run
Results based on blind-marking 100 GCSE essays across English Literature and Language, covering multiple attainment levels and a range of texts and papers. All marks — from Olex and from experienced examiners — were compared independently against an established seed mark. Tolerance bands of 10%, 12.5% and 15% are drawn from published inter-examiner research; 12.5% is the most commonly cited live-marking threshold.
