How Olex builds safety, privacy and professional judgement into every step.

Schools rightly ask hard questions before adopting any AI tool. We welcome that. Here is a plain-English summary of how Olex works, what we do with your data, and how we keep your students safe.

Teachers are always in control

Olex’s AI features are built for teachers, not students. Teachers review all AI-generated feedback and can edit it before anything is shared with a pupil – nothing reaches a student without the teacher choosing to send it. This keeps professional judgement where it belongs: with the teacher.

You are not outsourcing your professional judgement. Olex gives you a fast, consistent first read. What you do with it, whether you accept it, adjust it, or add your own insight, is entirely your call. The mark and the feedback remain yours.

Olex is the safe way to use AI in the classroom. Using Olex is not the same as pasting a student’s essay into a general-purpose chatbot. With Olex, student work is anonymised, handled under strict safeguards, and never used to train external AI models. Our marking is built to be bias-free and consistent, so every student is assessed against the same standard, whoever they are.

Where is AI used in the process

How we keep students safe

  • Olex is aligned with the DfE Generative AI Product Safety Standards for Schools and Colleges.
  • Student direct interaction with AI is limited to submitting work and handwriting transcription only.
  • There is no AI chatbot, no AI companion, no automated responses in the classroom.
  • Schools maintain the ability to disable direct student AI features.
  • Content filtering is applied to all work submitted through the platform. Anything flagged is reported directly to the teacher in the platform.
  • No AI-generated feedback or assessment data is released to the student until it has been reviewed and approved by a teacher.
  • Generation of AI imagery utilises a multi-layered moderation system, and all images require final teacher approval before being shared with students.

Your data is protected

  • Olex does not train AI on your data. Neither do our AI sub-processors, OpenAI and Google Gemini, when accessed through Olex.
  • Student names are anonymised before any work is processed by AI.
  • All data is stored on UK servers (AWS UK) and encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • Pupil data is never used for advertising or commercial profiling – by us or anyone we work with.
  • Your school or trust is the data controller at all times. We process data only on your instructions.
  • We are fully GDPR compliant.

When you end your subscription

  • Your data is deleted when your agreement ends, or sooner if you request it.
  • We provide written confirmation of deletion on request.
  • Essay data sent to AI processors is deleted within 30-55 days – retained only for abuse monitoring, then permanently removed.
